What Does The Research Say?
Doctors and scientists from around the world are exploring the effectiveness of mind/body techniques including hypnosis to increase pregnancy rates in infertile couples.
Professor Eliahu Levitas of Soroka hospital in Beersheva Israel, presented to the European Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Berlin in July of 2004. He concluded that hypnosis can double the success of IVF treatments.
The study of 185 women found that 28% of the women in the group who were hypnotized became pregnant, compared with 14% of those who were not.

Dr Alice Domar has been published in several important journals such as “Fertility and Sterility” (1990 and 2000) and the “Journal of the American Women’s Association (1999). In the 1999 study, 42% of 132 infertile women participating in a mind/body program conceived within 6 months of completing it. In the 2nd study (published in “Fertility and Sterility” 2000) 55% of the previously infertile women who met regularly conceived, compared with 20% of the control group who used no mind/body techniques.
Dr Elizabeth Muir, a clinical psychologist based in London, conducted a ground breaking study focusing on the mind-body connection using mostly hypnosis and psychotherapy. Her research showed
that 45% of women with unexplained infertility who completed the program were able to conceive and carry the pregnancy full term. She stated “Hypnotherapy is particularly s
uccessful in the area of fertility it enables us to access sub-conscious issues, which might be related to fertility. Very often an individual is not aware of those issues. With the skilled use of hypnotherapy a subject is helped to elicit her own
individual ability to resolve her specific issues of fertility.” www.elizabethmuirsclinic.com
In his book “Change Your Brain, Change Your Body” (2010) Dr Daniel Amen discusses the importance of making “stress reduction the first step before seeking pricey fertility treatments”. He also discusses how hypnosis is a method that can produce deep relaxation to help relax the uterus.
Dr Ernest Rossi is a specialist in psychobiology ( the relationship between the mind and the physical body) Through his extensive research he suggests that human genes must be in a state of physical readiness for conception to take place, and that hypnotic-type suggestions can activate specific genes.
